Evolution Seed is Non-GMO

GMO stands for genetically modified organism. GMO is generally talked about most in regards to foods, but avoiding GMOs is important in anything that gets planted.  Supporting non-GMO products is an easy step to take in order to limit the amount of GMOs people are exposed to.  Although there is no consensus on whether GMOs are safe or not, it is best to avoid them when you can.

A-LIST Certified

In addition to being a non-GMO product, Evolution grass seed is also A-LIST approved.  The Alliance for Low Input Sustainable Turf is a non-profit organization “seeking to aid turfgrass managers and grass growers by providing holistic guidelines that account for all factors in sustainable plant growth.”  The provide a list of turf varieties that are beneficial for the environment in many ways.  The approved varieties are heat tolerant and require decreased water use. The more that these grasses are used, the more water we can conserve.  In addition, the approved turf varieties also need less pesticide and fertilizer use.  These are all important factors to consider when selecting a grass to use.  Consider the impact this could have if not only homeowners, but professional grass and turf managers all pledged to use only A-LIST approved varieties.

Read the Label

Just like labels on other things, seed labels can be confusing.  Some things that are important to understand on a seed label are the purity and the varieties included, the germination percentages, and other ingredients.  Evolution seed for example includes a variety of fescues, ryegrass, and bluegrass.  Knowing what type of turf is included to decided on the appropriate seed for your project.  Next is the germination percentage. This indicates what percentage of the seed is capable of growth.  This percentage, however, is calculated using ideal conditions.  So, this may not be the result found in actual application depending on the environment and planting. This decreases with age of the seed so it is also important to look at the date the seed was tested.  Lastly, it is important to pay attention to the list of other ingredients.  This is where Evolution Seed stands out.

Other Ingredients

Some additional items listed on a seed label are weed seed, crop seed, and noxious weeds.  When you start to look at labels on other seed brands, you might find weed or other crop seed percentages around 0.5%. This may not seem like a lot. However, most weed seeds are smaller that grass seed and therefore can cover a large area when spread. Crop seed percentage is the weight of seeds that are grown as “agricultural crop.”  Depending on the variety of seed you are sowing, crop seed content may be a more important factor over weed seed.  This is because some varieties of these seeds are detrimental to other types of turf and will take over.  You want a product with as low a crops seed and weed seed content as possible. On Branch Creeks Evolution Grass Seed Label, crop see and other weeds are labeled at 0.00%.

Blue Tag Certified

This is important to note as well.  This means that what you see on the label is certified as stated.  Essentially, this guarantees that the seed you are purchasing has passed a rigorous examination process.  Not all seed is required to be tagged or put through as tough of an inspection. That being said, this certification does not guarantee any level of quality.  It simply declares that what is on the label is honest and true.
